1. Cividale del Friuli, Roman and Longobard Unesco Heritage site - Tuesday 10th October 2023
Initially a prehistoric settlement, Cividale del Friuli was renamed Forum Iulii – where the name Friuli comes from – by Julius Caesar himself sometime around 50 BC, later becoming the first Lombard duchy in Italy and subsequently the residence of the patriarchs of Aquileia.
Located close to the Slovenian border, the city preserves remarkable traces of its Lombard glory years, notably the Tempietto (small temple), one of the most celebrated and mysterious early medieval constructions in the Western world. Other treasures are preserved in the town’s two museums: the stone altar commissioned by Duke Ratchis of Friuli and the baptismal font of patriarch Calixtus can be seen at the Museo Cristiano, while the National Archaeological Museum displays a wealth of precious objects discovered in Cividale's Lombard cemeteries. The city’s rich artistic heritage was recognised by UNESCO in 2011, making Cividale the first stop along the so-called Longobard route, an itinerary that reveals outstanding if little-known treasures right in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
We will walk the charming streets of the city centre to explore the Celtic Hypogeum, overlooking the Natisone River from the Devil's Bridge, enabling us to admire the cathedral, churches, and fine palaces in what is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience.
A lunch at “Osteria al Leon d’oro” in Cividale is included in the fee. Return to Pordenone is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Book now! Payment should be made by cash at the Giornate Infodesk starting Sunday, October 8, 2023.
2. Pier Paolo Pasolini’s haunts in Casarsa - Saturday 14th October 2023
Pier Paolo Pasolini had deep ties to Friuli and in particular Casarsa, his mother Susanna Colussi’s hometown; it was where his earliest friendships were formed during summer holidays and became the family’s refuge as the war raged from 1943. In those years, the young Pasolini wrote and published his first verses in both Friulian and Italian, prompting new approaches to local poetry such as the Academiuta di Lenga Furlana (Friulian Dialect Academy). This formative time in Friuli sadly ended in early 1950, when he escaped to Rome together with his mother. In the Eternal City, he would grow as a poet, writer and director of masterpieces such as Accattone, Mamma Roma, The Gospel According to St. Matthew, etc., which made him renowned throughout the world.
The itinerary includes some of the more symbolic locations for Pasolini and his development: his mother’s house and the Academiuta di Lenga Furlana, now home to the Pier Paolo Pasolini Study Center, the Santa Croce church with frescoes by Pomponio Amalteo, the small village of Versuta with the beautiful Church of Sant’Antonio, and finally, the poet’s tomb in Casarsa cemetery.
The guided tour led by Raffaella Grasselli (Italian and English), includes a screening of the 30' documentary Pasolini in Friuli, with English subtitles.
A lunch at “Al Posta” restaurant in Casarsa is included in the fee. Return to Pordenone is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Book now! Payment should be made by cash at the Giornate Infodesk starting Sunday, October 8, 2023.
