DAS MÄDCHEN FÜR ALLES (Het Meisje voor alles)
[The Girl for Everything]
? (DE 1925)
In this animated film, a couple of bourgeois apartment owners have problems with their clumsy servant: clothes burned due to poor ironing, and broken dishes, as well as soot and dust from the stove scattered in the living room, make the house look unkempt. Finally, the landlords fire the troublesome housemaid. At first, they worry about the lack of help, but then they discover the perfect solution: electricity. The electric stove, iron, vacuum cleaner, portable heater, hairdryer, kettle, and lighting are easy to use and much more effective than a domestic servant. Thanks to electricity, tidiness, peace, and joy return to the home.
The appearance of electricity in urban homes was indeed a major breakthrough in housekeeping. Carrying heavy and dirty coal or removing ashes caused a lot of dirt. The new electrical devices eliminated these difficulties: they were easy to use, did not require as much effort, and did not generate dirt or bad smells.
Advertisements like this or [Electric Oven Commercial] (Poland, 1932; also presented in this section) were aimed mainly at homeowners, suggesting that they no longer needed to hire servants because they could handle the housekeeping chores by themselves, using modern electric equipment. As the title suggests, electricity became “the girl for everything”.
