1. Hidden Treasures of Western Friuli: Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo, master of 15th-century painting - Wednesday 5th October 2022
A visit dedicated to one of the masters of 15th-century Friulian painting, Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo. Born in Socchieve in Carnia in 1450, he is considered the brilliant initiator of the Tolmezzo school of painting, to which Andrea Bellunello and Domenico da Tolmezzo also belong. There is no certain documentation about his training, but in light of the most recent attributions it seems reasonable to assume a relationship with a large workshop in Padua or Venice. Many of his fresco cycles can be found in Carnia and nearby Comelico (Socchieve, Forni di Sopra e di Sotto, Invillino), but important works can also be admired in some churches in western Friuli.

In fact, the proposed visit includes the small church of San Gregorio at Castel d’Aviano (ca. 1497), with a cycle dedicated to the Passion of Christ; the country church of San Antonio at Barbeano, a stone’s throw from Spilimbergo, with frescoes painted before 1489; and the parish church of San Leonardo at Provesano, where the artist painted one of his most interesting and best-preserved cycles in 1496. Here, alongside the usual portrayals of Prophets, Doctors, and Saints, particularly Saints Sebastian and Rocco, Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo depicted scenes from the Apocalypse and nine episodes from the Passion of Christ around a large Crucifixion scene on the walls of the apse.
The visit will be guided by Fulvio Dell'Agnese and is organized with the collaboration of the Diocesan Art Museum of Pordenone and the availability of the parish priests of the churches involved, some of which are not usually accessible. A lunch with typical local flavours and specialities is included in the fee. Return to Pordenone is scheduled for 4 p.m.

2. Raimondo D’Aronco, master of Art Nouveau: the extraordinary special exhibition at Udine Castle - Saturday 8th October 2022
A Saturday dedicated to visiting the exhibition “Un architetto cosmopolita in patria. Raimondo D'Aronco in Friuli” (A Cosmopolitan Architect returns home, Raimondo D’Aronco in Friuli), which is currently on at the Castle Museums in Udine, will give visitors a close-up look at his extraordinary creative and artistic life and career. Raimondo D’Aronco (1857-1932) was one of the protagonists of international Art Nouveau architecture, in his case developed between Italy and Turkey, where he was in the service of the Sultan between 1893 and 1909. Born in Gemona del Friuli, D’Aronco is considered one of the Italy’s most important proponents of the Art Nouveau style (known in Italy as “Stile Liberty”). On behalf of the Italian government, he travelled to Istanbul to design for the Ottoman National Exhibition. However, the event was cancelled as a consequence of the earthquake that shook the city on 10 July 1894, and this led to the beginning of D’Aronco's collaboration with the Ottoman government. Travelling between Italy and Turkey, he created his most celebrated works, expressing himself through the Art Nouveau style with an Ottoman influence, which made him famous.

The visit will be guided by the curator of the exhibition, the scholar Diana Barillari. A lunch with typical local flavours and specialities is included in the fee. Return to Pordenone is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Book now! Payment should be made at the Giornate Infodesk.
